Mr. Bijaya Mallapaty joined the United Nations in 1973 and started his international career with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1978. He worked on international assignments for 32 years in different capacities in Africa, the Middle East, China, and in UNICEF’s global headquarters in New York, USA. 

During the course of his career with UNICEF, he managed a large rural water supply and sanitation programme in the Southern Sudan, led operations management of the UNICEF country offices in the Democratic Republic of Congo and China, and managed the regional operations for UNICEF regional headquarters in Amman, Jordan, covering 16 countries in the Middle East and North Africa.  In 2000, he was posted in UNICEF’s global headquarters in New York, where he worked as the global Budget Director of UNICEF and for 6 months as the Special Adviser in the Division of Human Resources.

Mr. Mallapaty graduated from Tri-Chandra College in Kathmandu, Nepal.  He also obtained a Masters (M.Sc. Econ. 1989) degree in Social Development Planning and Management from the Centre for Development Studies in Swansea, University of Wales, U.K., and a Masters degree in Public Policy (MIPP, 2000) from the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, Washington D.C., USA. 

After being away from his home country for 32 years, he returned to Nepal in 2010 to re-establish his roots and make a home in Kathmandu.  Despite being abroad for so long, Mr. Mallapaty had kept a very close link with his country and kept himself up to date with the socio-economic and political developments of Nepal.  He is a keen supporter of social development and rights of women and children in Nepal, and has been an active member of the Rotary International.

Mr. Mallapaty is married since 1983 to Gabriele Mallapaty, a German national, with whom he has a daughter and a son.
