500 Nepal Families Have a New Beginning Thanks to You

500 Nepal Families Have a New Beginning Thanks to You

Nepal families have experienced catastrophic August floods in southern Nepal, killing 100+ people and despaired thousands, including some of the children and families in our programs. With help from generous donors like you, NYF’s team in Nepal helped 500 affected families begin their road to recovery.  Your support reached them in time for Dashain – the most important Nepali festival that emphasizes family, community, and giving.

Because the extent of damage varied, NYF tailored immediate support to meet the essential needs of each family. After days of uncertainty and deprivation, the families each received 55 pounds of rice, 9 pounds of dal, 1 quart of oil, 2 pounds of salt, and 10 pounds of flour.

Families who were greatly affected but able to salvage their home received additional supplies such as blankets and 1,000 rupees (about $10) for clothes and school expenses. Two hundred Freed Kamlari women who lost their homes altogether also received blankets, a kitchen set, and 2,000 rupees (about $20). The NYF team will continue to assist as these families recover and rebuild from the devastation in their communities.

Nutritional Rehabilitation Homes (NRHs) are seeing an influx of malnourished children who are at high risk of relapsing with so much arable land seriously damaged.  The NRH in Banke, located in one of the hardest hit areas, doubled its capacity.

While the road to recovery is long, 500 families are taking an important step forward knowing people like you care. We hope you will keep supporting all of NYF’s work to provide life transforming opportunities for impoverished children and families.  Thank you!

NYF helps impoverished Nepali children overcome disabilities, abuse, neglect, and abandonment, and have the opportunity to build a happy, healthy, and productive future. Being part of the NYF family opens a new and brighter path.

This is what your support makes possible at Olgapuri (Olga’s little oasis), a beautiful, permanent home for some of the most vulnerable children in the world. With 4 homes for 80 children, a farm, and a vocational school, Olgapuri represents a long standing dream. That dream came true exactly one year ago, on September 25, 2016 — thanks to generous supporters like you.

Over the past year, our children and teens thrived in safe, nurturing homes at Olgapuri. They all moved on to the next grade at their schools. They received healthcare, celebrated festivals, enjoyed fresh food they helped grow at the farm, and stayed active throughout the year.

Thank you for making all of this possible! Your continued support is critical and means so much to children in the NYF family.

Please consider making a donation to commemorate the first anniversary of bright new beginnings at Olgapuri.

Nepal Flood Donation Opportunity as Devastating Flood Hits Nepal

“All houses have been destroyed by the flood. Some have already collapsed
and some are flooded.
We could not save any food and clothes.
Many of us are living in groups in the school building
which survived the flood.  There is no food and people are hungry.
Water is polluted. Many people have begun to get sick.
I am also suffering from fever and nausea.”

Large scale flooding triggered by torrential rain since August 11 has killed over 100 people in southern Nepal and left thousands homeless, and the toll is rising. Almost all of the southern belt has been flooded, affecting 6 million people.

NYF works in five of the flood-hit areas — Banke, Bardiya, Kailali , Kanchanpur and Dang — where our NRHs serve children already on the brink of malnutrition, and our Empowering Freed Kamlari program helps formerly enslaved girls build new lives.

We estimate that at least 150 girls have lost their homes, while 250 are badly affected. Many of them have lost businesses including food carts, tea and snacks cafes, grocery shops, tailoring, goat farming and pig farming with training from NYF and business loans. Since electricity and communication channels have been badly disrupted, and transportation is almost impossible due to flooded and broken roads, NYF staff is working to assess the damage.

The eleven Nutritional Rehabilitation Homes (NRHs) in the flooded southern belt were already saving the lives of children suffering from severe malnutrition.

Thousands of people, including children, have fallen sick due to polluted water, and food supplies are extremely limited. Children are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition during natural disasters. As rescue and relief efforts mount, we stand ready to help save the children who will be referred to our NRH programs.

How You Can Help

After already surviving so much hardship, these women and children are suffering again – and face the threat of losing everything.  Your support can reach them quickly through NYF’s team in Nepal.

Please help by giving as much as you can. Donate now.

Founder’s Day 2018

Celebrating the Difference We Make…Together!

On Thursday, June 7th, friends gathered for NYF’s annual Founder’s Day event. With Olga’s 93rd Birthday and another year of bringing life-changing programs to impoverished Nepali children and families – there was much to celebrate!

Many thanks to our inaugural Host Committee members and silent auction donors for their special support. The new silent auction added some fun bidding wars to the evening, and raised essential funds for our work.

Additional highlights included having NYF President Som Paneru and NYF-Nepal Executive Director Raju Dhamala in from Nepal to share the latest updates on our programs, and special guest Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba.

Dr Rana Deuba – a former Member of Parliament of Nepal and celebrated gender activist and social worker – and her husband, former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, are good friends of NYF. As such, Dr. Rana Deuba had many accolades to share about the birthday girl and guest of honor, Ms. Olga Murray!

Please enjoy these photos from the event.
